We were fortunate enough to go to Cairns 2yrs ago (infact, two years ago today we had arrived in Townsville after a week in Cairns and a few days in Caloundra), and whilst in Cairns, we went on a Reef trip. Cheap boat, long day, but WELL worth the time. We had been on the 'superfast' Cat out to Green Island 2 days before this, and decided that the outer reef was more our scene. We hesitated at spending $300 per person (yes, that much for the kids too) on a reef trip, so we investigated a more 'value for money' option. We found this company fantastic, and at $60 per adult, and children free (they'd never had kids on board before!) we were set to go!!!
Here's a picture of Luka - doing what she loves best... snorkelling at "Breaking Patches" on the Great Barrier Reef.

Thanks Tiff - that was relatively easy to change! She wouldn't need the bubble anymore for swimming, but for security on the reef I think she'd still request it... we'll see - hope to head up again next yr..
ahhh. much better for comments now
